报告简介

Mathematical inverse problems have wide applications in geophysics, medical imaging, nondestructive testing, signal processing, computer vision, machine learning and many other fields. Solving an inverse problem in mathematics is the process of calculating the causal factors (parameters) from a set of observations (data).  In this talk I will first briefly talk about the theories of inverse problems for partial differential equations. These theories provide us the fundamental tools to solve realistic problems in geophysics, such as estimating the velocity structure of the Earth’s interior, determining earthquake locations, and mapping subsurface boundary topography. Real applications into practical problems will then be presented. After that, we will discuss the importance of solving inverse problems in modern oil & gas industry, geothermal exploratio, as well as in achieving a better understanding of earthquake occurrences, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and associated geologic hazards.
